Furnish
The blend of fibre, water and additives fed to the paper machine, expressed as the proportion of each fibre source.
Freeness
A measure of how quickly water drains from a pulp suspension, used to control refining and machine drainage.
Couch
The vacuum roll at the end of the forming section where the wet sheet leaves the forming fabric and transfers to the press section.
Clothing
The forming fabrics, press felts and dryer fabrics that carry the sheet through the paper machine and wear out in service.
Black liquor
The spent cooking chemicals and dissolved wood substance from the digester, concentrated and burned in the recovery boiler to recover chemicals and energy.
Chemical recovery
The loop of evaporators, recovery boiler, causticising plant and lime kiln that turns black liquor back into cooking chemicals.
De-inking
The washing and flotation process that removes ink and contaminants from recovered paper to make recycled pulp.
Permit to work
The written authority that controls hazardous work on plant by confirming isolations and controls before the job starts.
Isolation
Locking and tagging every energy source that could harm a person working on plant, and proving the equipment is de-energised.
Licence limit
The maximum discharge or emission value allowed at a monitoring point by the environmental operating licence.
