Renewable fibre, reliable paper

CAQA Riverside Pulp and Paper, pulp and paper manufacturing
CAQA Riverside Pulp and Paper makes packaging papers from recovered fibre and plantation woodchip at an integrated mill in the Latrobe Valley. The mill produces about 190,000 tonnes a year of linerboard and fluting for corrugated box makers, together with a smaller volume of bleached kraft pulp sold to tissue and specialty paper customers. Recovered cardboard and office paper arrive from collection contractors and the Dandenong South depot, woodchip arrives by truck from plantation contractors, and finished reels leave by road and rail to box plants across south-eastern Australia. The business supplies packaging converters, food and beverage manufacturers, fresh produce exporters and export pulp buyers.
The mill runs continuously on a four-panel, twelve-hour rotating roster with day and night crews. Operations are organised into Pulping, Stock Preparation and the Paper Machine; Recovered Fibre and De-inking; Steam, Power, Water and Chemical Recovery; Finishing, Converting and Warehouse; Health, Safety and Environment; and Site Leadership, Planning and Quality. The kraft pulp line includes a digester, brown stock washing, bleach plant and a chemical recovery loop with a recovery boiler and lime kiln. The power boiler and turbine supply most of the site's steam and electricity, and the effluent treatment plant discharges to the river under licence.
Safety first
No tonne of paper is worth an injury. Every task starts with a hazard check and every person can stop a job.
Respect for the environment
The mill draws on the river and the forest and returns clean water and low emissions, and reports openly on both.
Reliability
Customers plan their box plants around Riverside reels arriving on time and on specification, every time.
Continuous improvement
Operators own their equipment, solve problems at the root and share what they learn across crews.
Services and operations
To make quality packaging paper from renewable and recovered fibre without harm to people, the river or the community.
Recycled linerboard and fluting
Corrugating medium and test liner made from recovered fibre in a range of grammages for box plants, supplied in reels cut to customer widths with certified basis weight and strength.
Bleached kraft pulp
Elemental chlorine free bleached softwood kraft pulp from plantation woodchip, baled and dried for tissue and specialty paper customers in Australia and export markets.
Recovered fibre collection and grading
Receipt, inspection and grading of recovered cardboard and office paper from collection contractors and commercial generators at the mill and the Dandenong South depot.
Custom slitting and converting
Slitting, rewinding and sheeting of paper reels to customer specifications in the finishing plant, with packaging and labelling for road and rail dispatch.
Technical and quality support
Laboratory testing, certificates of analysis, runnability support at customer box plants and complaint investigation by the quality team.
Energy and by-product supply
Surplus electricity exported to the grid from the turbine, and sale of lime mud, fly ash and rejects to approved reuse partners under environmental approvals.
