Work Health and Safety Policy
v4.1
Purpose. This policy sets the site's commitment to preventing injury and illness and the responsibilities of every person working at or visiting Riverside.
1.Commitment
Riverside will provide and maintain a working environment that is safe and without risks to health, so far as is reasonably practicable. The site will identify hazards, assess risks and apply the hierarchy of controls before work starts. Safety performance will be reported at every daily production meeting and every monthly site review.
2.Scope
This policy applies to employees, contractors, labour hire workers, visitors and students at the mill, the depot and the sales office. It applies to every task, including operating, maintenance, cleaning, sampling and administration. Contractors must comply with this policy as a condition of site access.
3.Responsibilities
The General Manager must provide the resources and leadership for this policy. Managers and supervisors must ensure that risk assessments, permits, isolations and training are in place before work is assigned. Every worker must follow procedures, use the controls and protective equipment provided, report hazards and incidents, and stop any task that is unsafe.
- General Manager: resources, leadership and review
- Managers and supervisors: risk controls, permits, training, supervision
- Workers: follow procedures, report hazards, stop unsafe work
- HSE team: systems, audits, investigation and advice
4.Critical risks
The site has identified critical risks that can kill or permanently injure. These are managed through mandatory critical controls that must be verified before the task proceeds. Critical risks include entanglement in rotating machinery and nips, stored energy and isolation failures, confined space entry, working at heights, mobile plant and pedestrian interaction, hazardous chemicals including chlorine dioxide, sodium hydroxide and black liquor, steam and hot surfaces, and fire and explosion in the recovery boiler.
5.Consultation
Workers will be consulted on matters that affect their health and safety through the health and safety committee, crew toolbox talks and the daily production meeting. Elected health and safety representatives will have the training, time and access needed to perform their role. Issues raised will be recorded and answered.
6.Incident reporting and investigation
Every injury, near miss, hazard and environmental incident must be reported to a supervisor before the end of the shift and recorded in the Incident and Hazard Register. Incidents with the potential for serious harm will be investigated to root cause using the site method. Corrective actions must be assigned, tracked and verified.
7.Review
This policy will be reviewed annually and after any serious incident or change in legislation. The health and safety committee will be consulted on every review. The current version is available on the intranet and displayed at every crib room.
